It’s a good question, why are we not in a solar world that is harnessing more of the suns energy, I mean enough sunlight reaches the earth’s surface each minute to satisfy the world’s energy demands for an entire year! So what’s the problem?
It is hard to provide a concise answer to this as there are many different factors at play. The cost and return on investment, the low cost of alternate generation, available land, the hours it can generate (daylight), storage for night time use, politics, grid connections and so on and so on. That said, the EIA is forecasting renewables to be the fastest-growing source of generation.
In the commercial space, the typical obstacle I come across is placement. Not enough space to put panels on the ground, roofs create challenges for maintenance and repair, payback is too long, financing not straight forward, and building leases too short. I also find it interesting that one of the most challenging places to get solar generation installed is Arizona, where there is more sunshine than you can shake a stick at.
A solar world creates a problem for utility companies, not only do they lose revenue as folks go off-grid, but they also have to maintain the ability to satisfy your demand if the sun is not shining. This daylight generation bump creates what is known as a duck curve, and addressing this problem is a priority. Until resolved, some utilities are actively discouraging such schemes with delayed or expensive grid connections, reduced incentive schemes, and higher demand charges to replace lost revenues.
But all is not lost.
The solar world is continuing to build but at a slower pace with more strategic planning. Vervantis has a team of distributed generation specialists who carry out detailed viability studies to get the best fit for each organization before conducting thorough vendor analysis to find the right partners to build and finance.
Being agnostic on vendors and technology and working as your trusted advisor, we can drive more value from schemes that are sized correctly and project managed from start to finish.
